Haunted Mansion Foyer and Yo Ho Cover Versions

For those of you that missed Episode...84? 83? something... of our podcast, you missed that we announced a rock cover album we're currently working on and tinkering with. The album will be all Disney theme park music, all done in various rock music styles. So far, the only completely finished song is Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life For Me from the Pirates of the Caribbean, done in a gritty hard-hitting punk rock style. And here it is:

Next up is the first half of our Haunted Mansion cover, the foyer and ballroom music, done in a sweet metal-ish style.

We're almost done with the Grim Grinning Ghosts part of the song, which will be added to the above song as one entire music track. We're also almost done with a really happy ska/rock cover of the Tiki Room, and it's sure to get your toes tappin'!

So if you've enjoyed these, here is the list of the rest of the songs we're looking at for the entire album:

-Small World
-Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow
-One Little Spark
-Big Blue World (from The Seas and the Finding Nemo Musical)
-Three Cabelleros
-Swisskapolka
-Nowhere In Particular
-Tree of Life Theme

And this is where we take requests, because we're a song or two short of where we want to be. We're trying to get at least one song from every state-side park, but noticeably absent on this list is California Adventure and Hollywood Studios! Throw your ideas at us, and stay tuned as future songs roll out!

Sleeping Beauty

Recently the Blu-Ray Diamond Edition of Sleeping Beauty came out. Having already owned the movie and not being one to explore special features and bonus blah blah blahs, I still didn't purchase the Blu-Ray. However, I did do one thing that I haven't done for years: I watched the movie.

You're not supposed to talk to strangers.
ESPECIALLY in a dark forest.
Now let me be forward with you. I'm pretty sure the last time I saw this movie was when I was about 4 years old. I know the beats of it. King and Queen have a daughter, Maleficent gets crazy pissed because she's a snooty evil bitch, curses said daughter, three incompetent fairies raise said daughter, curse still happens, prince comes riding in, slays a dragon, kisses underage dead girl, everyone lives happily ever after. Great, fantastic. Shouldn't take more than 35 minutes, right?

Good hell, a 75 minute run time? And here's my biggest problem for this movie. For the most part, nothing happens. I feel like half of the movie is just filler. For example, there's a musical acid trip after each fairy gives their blessing/gifts on baby Aurora. Even though those sequences seriously looked awesome, they were really stretching to reach that 75 minute run time.

And I don't mind filler a lot of the time, as long as the characters are interesting. A mistake in this movie was to make the three bumbling fairies the main characters. They just don't do anything for me. They annoyed me. And I don't want to be accused of "well, you're not looking at it through 1959's eyes!" To which I say I loved the seven dwarfs, and that  was in 1937.
So grating...

Look! Look! Even the king and queen are bored!
That right there might be my biggest problem with Sleeping Beauty. It's far too similar to Snow White, and Snow White remains superior. Was the top studio talent too busy working on Disneyland during this time? I have a habit while watching the credits of old Disney movies to pick out the well-known Imagineers in the credits. In this movie, the pickins were slim, and Disneyland was all I could think of that was going on around the Disney studio during this time. (I know Disneyland opened in 1955, but production of Sleeping Beauty lasted for 6 years, which puts both projects starting around the same time.)

The film's saving grace...
On a positive note, the art in this movie is superb. Its really is a glorious thing to look at, and it stands out among the other Disney fairy tales of the time. Also, Maleficent is a great villain. No back story is given of her, but she's evil, and she's pissed, and she seems happy about both of these. They say a good villain doesn't realize he/she is the villain, but I'm certain Maleficent knows exactly how villainous she is. Despite being trapped in a sub-par movie, she remains my favorite Disney villain. I mean, come on, she turns into a frikkin' dragon.

...and a kick ass dragon!
Sleeping Beauty is a half hour special stretched out into a full-length feature, and although it dazzles the eyes and contains a great villain, the lack of interesting characters and character development bring the movie down. I give it 4 out of 10 spindles.

Tomorrowland lives!

Jake is wrong. I think that Tomorrowland fits in Disneyland better than a Trojan Magnum on a midgets arms...  Anyway, Tomorrowland is perfect, and here is why:

Googie architecture abound!
First off, it was an unintended theme, but today it has a sort of "Yesterday's Tomorrow Today" theme.  No really, a googie styled rocket? Check!  Cars? Check!  Freeway? Check! Even Buzz Lightyear almost fits into my imagined theme with his Astro Blaster and B movie sci-fi aliens (I know that the proper term in California is "displaced intergalactic beings").
Still relevent

I will admit that the future must be a tough thing to keep up with, Disney must have realized that, too, so why try?  In fact, they have tried and I kind of think they need to cool their jets and take a step back.  I'm thinking that there should be some sort of slow ride that just propels guests on a short tour of Tomorrowland.  Nothing too fancy, but definitely having googie architecture. OH! Something like inter-terminal train at the George Bush International Airport in Houston!

Yeah! Bring a version of this sucker back!
Preferably without Monsanto.
Innoventions currently has a House of Today attraction, which is okay, but again, I think that they need to step back to yesterday's house of tomorrow.  Man, how neat would it be to see how we thought we would be living in 2011 through 1955's eyes?  In fact, that is where Autopia should go as well.  Make those bitches hover!

As far as the Submarines go...  Move them somewhere else.  They never fit in Tomorrowland.

Okay, Okay, maybe Tomorrowland isn't quite dead, but it does seem to be on life support.  It needs a good shot of penicillin to get it back on an even keel.  Maybe this new movie will help...

Is Tomorrowland Dead?

With the swirling rumors over the last couple months of Disneyland's Tomorrowland becoming home to a sort of Star Wars Land instead, it got me thinking: Would this really be so bad? And I don't mean in terms of content and attractions. Hell, that could be a whole other blog post altogether. What I mean is the idea of Tomorrowland. The vision. The heart and soul and various other ways to show emphasis in typed-word. Let's dive into this, head first.

A vista into a world of wondrous ideas, signifying Man's achievement. A step into the future, with predictions of constructed things to come. Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure and ideals. The Atomic Age, the challenge of Outer Space and the hope for a peaceful, unified world. - Walt Disney

Above is the dedication of Tomorrowland from Disneyland's opening day. That was back when you could find attractions in Tomorrowland such as Monsanto's Hall of Chemistry, The World Beneath Us, the World Clock, and other exhilarating thrill rides. Sarcasm aside, the original Tomorrowland did indeed hold true to Walt's words.
Ah, the Hall of Chemistry... Why doesn't Monsanto sponsor
more attractions? They seem like a respectable company...

But now look what we have. Autopia is still there. Space Mountain, Star Tours, Captain EO, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, and the best pizza restaurant in all of Tomorrowland! But wait. These are all science fiction! The attractions with a foot somewhat in reality is Autopia (trust me, internal combustion engines will be all the rage one day, just give them time) and Space Mountain with its generic view of space travel, albeit to a kick ass soundtrack! There's also Innoventions, but hold that thought. We'll get to that in a bit.

So what the hell? Where's my science in Tomorrowland? Where's my predictions and achievements? Why the hell is there an attraction from 1955 in TOMORROWland? Well, I hate to be the one to break the bad news to you, but it isn't there.
This just isn't the future anymore.

The thing is, we now live in a world of corporate ideas and the rampant speed of technology. First, the tech companies don't want to show off their ground breaking tech anymore, probably for fear of someone else seeing it and deciding there's a way to make it cheaper and faster and serve cake on the side. They keep that shit under wraps until it's almost ready to be sold.

Second of all, with the speed of technology nowadays, no matter what a company put in Tomorrowland to be showcased, it would be obsolete very quickly. Maybe even before the exhibit opened. I remember walking into Innoventions (a mistake on my part) and seeing a bay of the original Xbox set up to play. Which was weird because I had an Xbox 360 at home. That was when Tomorrowland died a little in my heart.

I'm pretty sure even Disney knows it can't keep up with Tomorrow. Innoventions is slowly turning into a Marvel meet n' greet, Honey I Shrunk the Audience got reverted back to a movie from the 1980's (going backwards is actually the exact opposite of stepping towards tomorrow) and the Astro Orbitor got docked on the ground instead of up in the sky where it belongs.
Grounded rockets. That makes sense.

Do I hate Tomorrowland? No, I love it. Star Tours and Space Mountain remain some of my all-time favorite rides. I'm just ready to let go of the idea of "Tomorrow," especially since we haven't had it for over a decade or more. If Tomorrowland ever became Star Wars Land or even just Space Port Land (they'll have to work on that title) I wouldn't complain, as long as it all meshed together in an awesome cohesive theme.

Of course, now that there is a Tomorrowland movie coming out, I'm going to do a Babe-Ruth-Pointing-to-Left-Field moment: Disney is sitting on Tomorrowland to see if the movie is a hit. If it is, the land will be remade after the movie while Star Wars and Marvel will be saved for Disneyland's third park. If the movie is a hit. Fortunately, no one really knows what the movie is even about yet, so... Tune in next May!

Coming up next, Josh takes the stand with a counter-argument,

Bigger World Showcase Crimes Than Frozen

I'm sure we've all heard by now that our precious Maelstrom ride in Epcot is going the way of the Horizons to make room for a Frozen attraction. And now that its closing date has been announced, suddenly it's everyone's favorite ride. I'm not here to tell you that you're wrong (you probably are) or that it wasn't that great of a ride (it really wasn't) or that characters don't belong in World Showcase (I don't see why not.) No, I'm not here to tell you any of that. What I am here to do is to point out that there are currently far bigger crimes against humanity lingering in World Showcase. We've allowed these abominations to linger here. Far more insulting than any Frozen attraction. Let's check out a few of these!

1. Italy. I mean, come on. This pavilion blows. I want to know how this pavilion planning session went:
"Okay, we have some Italian buildings! What else do we need?"
"Italy has pasta."
"Great! Get some pasta in there! What else?"
"Overpriced pasta!"
"Fantastic! Write that down! What else can we put in?"
"....."
"....."
"......"
"Alright. We'll call it a day."

Hope you like pasta and disappointment!
2. There's a frikkin' show building in Germany just sitting there with nothing in it. Although popular rumor is that it's being used for storage. I'm pretty sure that was not the purpose they intended when they built it. I will take a Frozen ride over an abandoned building any day of the week. Especially Tuesday!

"I feel so empty inside..."
3. The entire American Adventure pavilion besides the show. The show is wonderful. But everything outside of that theater is just bland, sanitized, boring, dull rubbish. When the Electric Umbrella across the pond is better than your sorry excuse for an American eatery, you should rethink some of your decisions. I don't like it, and if I'm not there for the show, I walk on by, covering my face so it doesn't recognize me.

'Murica!
4. The Outpost. Can we just put this glorified Coke stand out of its misery already? Especially since inside the Walt Disney World Resort, there's already a fantastic representation of Africa over at Animal Kingdom. Go to Harambe. Burn down the Outpost. It would be an improvement along the World Showcase promenade.
Don't make eye contact. Just keep walking.

5. ....Okay at the moment, I can't think of anything for number 5. But that still leaves a solid list of 4 other things that are worse than a quirky attraction that most people ride just because it's there and something to do being replaced by a Frozen attraction. I'm not going to miss the hospital-hallway queue.

Like waiting in line for a prostate exam.

Podcast Episode 87

Starting things off this week is Matt bringing something to the show that we have never heard of! And it's Disney! And we didn't expect that. Then we move right along into this week's biggest news: The Maelstrom. If you're reading this, you already know. But we have a very special surprise guest this week to help us discuss. Then Matt goes on ahead and completely ruins his own segment. We do some quick rounds of Fact or Bullshit and everybody's favorite: TripAdvisor Game of Shaaaaaame! Then our show gets completely hijacked during Listener Questions by another surprise guest, and we couldn't be happier! You'll enjoy this one, swabs! This week on the Mickey Mutineers Podcast, after killing time waiting for Tim to show up, we do what we have to do and try our best at a tribute to the late, great Robin Williams. The man was amazing, and will be greatly missed. After that we cover our version of this week's news, Matt goes to a water park, and then we get to our main feature: since there's been a lack of Disney rumors lately, we make up our own! And you can probably guess where it goes from there... Anyway, enjoy this episode! It's our last one. Until next week. Then we'll have another. And another. And another. Etc. We're like herpes.
